SATURNcast: The Jonestown Massacre

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007

Listen here.

Today I discuss Jim Jones and the People’s Temple.

Jones, who started as a preacher became more and more insane and paranoid — eventually leaving the United States with his followers and starting Jonestown.

Many people living in Jonestown felt trapped and held hostage. When Congressman Leo Ryan flew to Jonestown to investigate he was shot dead.

Jim Jones, in the height of paranoia, convinces hundreds of his followers to kill themselves on Kool-Aid laced with cyanide.

I play the recording of the final 25 minutes where Jim Jones convinces his flock that the time is now to kill themselves.

I think you will be shocked at how little emotion or protest there actually is.

1938 headlines

Read about the aftermath and impact of the program here.

This was done in 1938. That’s right 1938.

You have to keep in mind, nothing like this had ever been attempted on radio before.
I first listened to this when I was very young. I was thrilled because I had just received my very first library card and was amazed you could check records out!

I listened on my tiny record player (that my dad purchased for me at a next-door neighbor’s garage sale) and I listened over and over again.

It has stuck with me and influenced me. My views on public relations and media manipulation stem from this 1938 audio program.

Enjoy. I sure did.

It’s been copied since, but they have been poor imitations.

SATURNcast Shownotes — Rings of Saturn #9

Saturday, September 30th, 2006

Walt!I start off this show badly — Saturn gas leaks into my studio — which effects the show.

I make the announcement that this week I am holo-decking down to Earth and that the Bean and I are going to Disney World! I bitch about people who feel the need to share with us that they do not like Disney World. I do not care what you think. And even if you really don’t like Disney, why the hell would you be so rude as to openly tell me you do not like it when you know I am going there?

I miss Bill Clinton. Remember when we had a President who could actually talk? While I do miss him, I mention that he really “blew” it when he got messed up with Monica Lewisnky.Lewinsky I think the world is too hard on Monica Lewisnky. She was only a 20-something intern who was seduced by the most powerful man in the world. Who wouldn’t have done what she did?

I feel sorry for her and she needs a break.

I play a funny clip from the Armed Forces Radio Network.

I plug two great podcasts:

Matt Blender’s Okay So Radio and Lucky Bitch Radio podcasts.

I notice a trend. I seem to like the gay podcasters better than the straight podcasts. As a straight man, I wonder why that is. I conclude that the gay podcasters are just funnier and witty. Straight people try too hard to be Howard Stern — and there is only one Howard Stern.

Jackie the JokemanSpeaking of Howard Stern — the Bean and I went to see Jackie “The Jokeman” Martling in concert this week. IT WAS THE WORST SHOW I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE. Jackie was trying out a new show — that involved almost no comedy and a lot of folk singing. At $27 dollars a ticket it was an outrageous waste of money.

SATURNcast Shownotes — Rings of Saturn #7

Sunday, September 17th, 2006

And why beholdest the mote in thy brother’s eye,
But not consider the beam in thine own?

You can hear Rings of Saturn #7 right here.

I start the show by playing a very nice audio comment from Rebecca Nay of Tranny Wreck Radio. Rebecca Nay

I play the abdication speech of King Edward VIII of England — December 1936.

I play a famous radio blooper by Taylor Grant from a 1953 ABC News radio newscast.

This week was the fifth anniversary of the tragedy of September 11, 2001. I discuss there is a big difference between the tragedy of September 11, 2001 and the media spin called “9/11″
I rant big time about the NY Post and other media outlets that whore off of 9/11 and pretend that they are “being real” and sincere.

I’m sorry, did I miss the fact that all the newspapers on September 11, 2006 were free? — I didn’t think so. . .

I rant about how reporters think they are God’s gift to earth and that they think they are smarter than everyone else.

Am I the only one who can’t stand news shows in which reporters interview other reporters about what these reporters think about the news? Reporters think they are the news.

Easy there Woodward. . .fancypants

Brad Pitt announces he won’t get married until gay people can get married. I am confused as to why everyone is so goo-goo ga-ga over this.

Am I the only one who remembers that Brad Pitt married Jennifer Aniston and divorced her already? Jen

(FULL DISCLOSURE: I am a Jennifer person, not an Angelina person)

A millioniare announcing he won’t get married again is not a big deal. It is simply Public Relations.
I will be impressed when a working class couple who can’t afford not to get married doesn’t get married until gay people can.

(FULL DISCLOSURE: I am married. I hate that gay people can’t get married. Yes, I am a hypocrite.)

I urge everyone to blog. No matter what you write about it is important. Don’t let the media tell you what to think. Do it for yourself!

Here is some free blogging sites:

Blog Here

Or Here

Here is another free one

blog!!!

And if you don’t like those, Google it.

I end the show by playing a song from The Podsafe Music Network“Hypocrites Code” by Big Softee

SATURNCAST SHOWNOTES: RINGS of SATURN #2

Sunday, August 20th, 2006

Lawyers I started off the SATURNcast “Rings of Saturn #2″ with a song from Steve Newman and Friends, “Lullaby for Lawyers” off the Podsafe Music Network.

I discuss the Jon Benet Ramsey case. Some idiot claiming to murdering her has been arrested in Thailand. I do not think he did it, but rather has some sick fetish over being linked to Jon Benet.

I scold the media for giving this idiot so much attention — exactly what he wants.

I discuss there is only three reasons anyone from the West would ever go to Thailand:

1) The food

2) A cheap but high quality sex-change operation and:

3) A really horrific reason: You are a pedophile.

I discuss how much a pain in the ass it is to fly these days. I bemoan the fact that the governmnet gives out way too many terror alerts. So much so that people have become desensitized to them.

I talk about that woman who had a massive panic attack on a plane which forced it to make an emergency landing. She should have asked her doctor for a sedative before her flight.

Mail!I open my e-mailbag! (saturncast@gmail.com)

NiiceLady sends me a nice e-mail about my show. She gives me a link to her blog.

I thank her for the feedback she gave Bean about the podcast. I admit that the first show sucks! I mention that I have improved my equipment and software since then — and hopefully the show sounds much better.

I compare these early SATURNcast shows to the early Apollo Space Missions. All those poor early Apollo astronauts got to do was some lame-ass orbits around the Earth to see if the equipment worked for Apollo 11. Their missions were just as important, but no one remembers them. I would like to think the early Saturncast shows are like this!

GREAT NEWS!

Jenifer Wilson, a 62 year old woman dying from cancer in the Netherlands, e-mailed me one hour before an operation she does not know if she will live from, to inform me she is going to will me $5,500,000!!! All I have to do if e-mail her lawyer in the Netherlands with my account information! Fantastic! I had no idea my show had such a profound impact on people.Captain and the BitchI treat all of you listeners to a demo tape I made when I hosted a show on WABC on July 4, 1976. The show is ruined because that bitch, Toni Tennille of the band Captain and Tennille called into WABC, not knowing I was hosting the show that day. She owed me money from an original watch I had given her. (Did you know I invented the wristwatch?)1976

I mention I grow tired of people asking me about the planet Pluto. Where were all of you when I discovered all that space stuff in the 1600s?

I end the show by playing a neat song from JAM Creative Productions — where they piece together all the jingles from their radio station accounts from the mid-1980’s.

If you do not know what to get me for a gift. Here is a suggestion: buy me a jingle from JAMS for the SATURNcast! You can do that right here.

I will be away on vacation this week! But you should have a new SATURNcast on Sunday! And I will try to update the SATURNdiary as much as possible!
